PRICKWILLOW VILLAGE CIC – EVENT REPORT
AIR CRASH MEMORIAL EVENT & OFFICIAL UNVEILING OF STONE PLAQUE – 80th Anniversary
Saturday 8th February at 2.30pm at the War Memorial site and afterwards in the village hall.
A formal service was held at the War Memorial with an opening speech from the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Roger Herriot, OBE, the telling of the story by Chris Jakes, long-standing resident and local historian, the unveiling of the plaque by Maureen and Beverley Scott, descendants of the victims, dedication and prayers by the reverend Canon Jeremy James, the laying of a wreath by Staff Sergeant Zaddis Walker of the USAAF from RAF Mildenhall, the Act of Remembrance by the British Legion and City of Ely Military Band, with the US and UK versions of the Last Post played by Laurine and Phil Green. The National Anthem was played at the end and our Mayor of Ely, Chris Phillips, closed the ceremony with a moving summary. We all had tea and cake afterwards in the village hall, prepared and served by the committee members of PV CIC, where a display of articles, photographs and memoirs could be seen and read.
With the plaque now in place, we feel assured that the story of the victims will not be forgotten by the Prickwillow residents, past, present and future.
